Reals and Rationals was founded with the vision of developing mathematical thinking, that can be retained for life, among kids and young adults.
Mathematics is the language of precise deductive reasoning. So, mathematical thinking involves understanding the vocabulary (concepts) of the language, being able to express (abstract) real-world scenarios in this language, and applying the language (logically deduce through steps) to solve problems. This in turn means having confidence to come up with one’s own procedures and methods to solve new types of problems rather than just knowing standard procedures for solving a predetermined type of problems.
With this vision in mind, the curriculum and pedagogy of Reals and Rationals have been carefully designed. The curriculum focuses on core concepts and the “why” behind the concepts (the inter-relationships between concepts and the relevance of concepts to applications), while the pedagogy emphasizes on students expressing step-by-step their understanding of concepts.
Reals and Rationals was founded in 2016, and has been satisfactorily implementing its vision for middle-school, high-school and university students since then.
Besides content related to our teaching, our website hosts a blog and a collection of our own hand-crafted challenge problems.
Reals and Rationals was founded and is directed by Sandeep Yaddula. Sandeep has a master’s degree in Mathematics from University of Maryland. Sandeep also has a master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, which he used for over 20 years in various engineering roles, prior to focusing full-time on Reals and Rationals.
